This is the post I wrote when our son was born….meet a very special part of the Hensley Family Cast.
At 2:33am on Friday August 26th Skyler and I welcomed the cry of our son, Ransom Levi Hensley.
That sweet sound of our boy bursting into this world is one that we had been praying for long before we were married, and had shed countless tears over as we walked through years of heartache as the pregnancy tests came back negative, the empty prescription bottles piled up, and sadness slowly began to cloud the hope we had for starting a family of our own.
But thankfully God has a plan far greater than any we could imagine. And this week He’s introduced us to our first, of hopefully many, children who will fill our hearts and home with joy. He’s beautiful, and takes our breath away nearly every moment we get to be with him. To those of you who are struggling to start a family of your own – take heart – He is faithful, and though we don’t know your story, we do know that God is good, His timing is perfect, and He has an incredible plan for you and your family. The difficult parts of this journey have made the moments this past week even sweeter.
We’ve had a number of people ask us over the course of our 12 year marriage about what names we would select for our children. I suppose with parents named Skyler and Harmony it only seems fitting that our child would have a unique name.
We’ve prayed over thousands of names over the years and even went to the hospital with a “short list” of 37 names that we would choose from once we met our sweet boy. The name that kept rising to the top of the list was Ransom Levi, and after a couple of days cuddling and praying over our boy we decided this would, in fact, be his name.
So what’s in a name you ask?
The name Ransom means “Protector; Warriror’s Shield” and according to Webster’s Dictionary means – “the redemption of a prisoner, slave, or kidnapped person, for a price.” Or “a means of deliverance or rescue from punishment for sin, especially the payment of a redemptive fine.”
When we look at our son we are humbled and reminded that God sent HIS son to live and die for us. We realize that as Mary cradled her sweet boy she knew that one day he would die for you and I. We were ransomed. A price was paid for us and for our salvation. So we will raise Ransom to be a boy (and man) after God’s own heart. A boy (man) who will grow up knowing that there is a great mission for his life to seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.
His middle name is Levi. This name is two fold. First of all it’s a tribute to Skyler, who shares this middle name. I (Mommy speaking here) have been incredibly blessed to be on this journey with Skyler and am overjoyed to see him father our sweet boy. The name “Levi” means – we are united as one. And now, more than ever, we (Skyler and Harmony) are united. We hope this sweet boy will bring out the best in both of us.
Welcome to the world Ransom! We love you more than you can ever imagine. Now let’s change the world….together.
